New head coaches lead men’s, women’s basketball programs

USF men’s and women’s basketball programs welcomed new head coaches in March.

Chris Mack comes to Tampa with a 323-153 record from 15 head-coaching years at his alma mater, Xavier University; the University of Louisville; and, most recently, the College of Charleston. He has 12 seasons of 20-plus victories and nine NCAA Tournament appearances, with an 11-9 record, including four Sweet 16 trips and one Elite Eight.

At Louisville, his Cardinals reached No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. At Xavier, his Musketeers were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“Chris Mack is the perfect leader for our next chapter,” says USF Athletics CEO Rob Higgins. “He has not only been where we are going, but he has also won where we are going. He’s ready to lead us there.”

Kristy Curry brings to USF a 554-322 record after compiling 27 highly successful seasons as a head coach at Purdue, Texas Tech and, most recently, Alabama universities. She led Purdue to the 2001 NCAA Final Four and has racked up two NCAA Elite Eight and four NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.

She is the only coach in women’s basketball history to record 100 or more wins at three different Power 4 schools.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Kristy Curry to our Bulls family as the leader of our outstanding women’s basketball program,” Higgins says. “Kristy is a proven winner at the highest levels, with head coaching success across the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC.”
